Ukrainian forces have dismantled a major Russian infiltration effort in the Dobropillia–Druzhkivka sector of Donetsk Oblast, the 1st Azov Corps announced, eliminating a Russian force that had been quietly building up over the summer and destroying what Ukrainian military analysts describe as the backbone of Moscow's 2026 plan to encircle Ukraine's eastern fortress belt.
How the operation unfolded
According to the corps' account, Ukrainian commanders decided not to wait for the Russian concentration to mature into a breakthrough. The 425th "Skala" assault regiment — newly subordinated to the 1st Azov Corps — fought its first operation under Azov command alongside the corps' special-purpose detachment, reconnaissance battalions, and a drone group flying FPV and dropper drones, in what the corps describes as a drone-led combined-arms assault.
The tactics were methodical: Ukrainian artillery first isolated the concentration area to restrict Russian movement, then assault groups advanced while drones and guns worked around them. Entrenched Russian positions were fixed, handed to drone strikes, and cleared by assault troops. A specialized Ukrainian artillery effort also targeted Russian howitzers to degrade their barrels and strip the infiltration force of fire support. Ukrainian logistics in the sector, the corps says, increasingly run on unmanned ground vehicles for resupply — a response to terrain and dense Russian drone activity that make casualty evacuation and movement exceptionally dangerous, pushing commanders to destroy detected positions remotely rather than expose assault troops.
The corps reports Russian losses from the operation at 237 killed, 44 wounded, and 3 captured — figures that should be treated as Ukrainian claims until independently confirmed. On the Russian side, Ukrainian analysts say the infiltration was built around elements of the 90th Tank Division and the 8th Combined Arms Army.
A 2026 plan in ruins
The strategic stakes were larger than one sector. Ukrainian analysts argue Russia had spent 2026 trying to assemble the conditions for a two-sided encirclement of the Donetsk "fortress belt" — the chain of fortified towns anchoring Ukraine's eastern defenses — and that the Dobropillia–Druzhkivka buildup was the lever meant to reach Ukrainian logistics routes and open the road toward Druzhkivka.
Moscow, meanwhile, claimed it had fully encircled a town on the fortress belt's southwestern approach. The Institute for the Study of War has found no evidence for that encirclement claim, Ukrainian analysts note, arguing the announcement was timed to the UN General Assembly to portray Ukrainian defenses as collapsing and pressure Kyiv toward capitulation. Instead of a staging ground for a breakthrough, the analysts say, the Russian penetration became an isolated pocket — and Russia's summer offensive effort around the sector failed to generate major advances.
Russian logistics crumble under drone pressure
Footage from the sector underlines a deeper Russian problem: logistics. Ukrainian analysts say Russian supply lines are being steadily hunted, with strike footage showing supply trucks destroyed near and behind the front line. Russian troops are increasingly moving on unarmored light transport — pickup trucks and Chinese- and Russian-made golf carts fitted with ineffective electronic-warfare antennas and no drone protection — while Ukrainians use coordinated unmanned ground vehicles to move supplies.
At one Ukrainian-strike-damaged bridge crossing, the Russians built a limited-capacity temporary crossing that has created traffic jams — a chokepoint analysts say Ukraine may concentrate future strikes on.
Conclusion
With the infiltration force erased, Ukrainian commanders say they have bought additional time around the Dobropillia–Druzhkivka sector — time Moscow can no longer count on as its 2026 encirclement plan unravels. Russia, which Ukrainian analysts assess has now lost the initiative on this axis, will have to reconstitute a force it spent months assembling before it can try again to threaten Ukraine's eastern defenses.
