Ukrainian command has rushed fresh reinforcements into the Orikhiv sector of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, blunting a Russian offensive that aimed to encircle the frontline town and restoring a drone-dominated defensive screen that has left Russian assault groups exposed.
Russia's push toward encirclement
Russian forces have recently intensified offensive operations around Orikhiv, capturing ground around the town as part of what the Institute for the Study of War describes as an attempt to encircle the settlement and cut Ukrainian logistics into it. Russian military bloggers have claimed elements of Russia's Dnepr Grouping of Forces shifted assaults toward Preobrazhenka, Novopavlivka and Mala Tokmachka, and have asserted fire control over the H-08 highway linking Zaporizhzhia City to Orikhiv — claims that remain Russian-sourced and unverified by independent observers.
Orikhiv sits at the centre of the sector and has long served as a logistics node stretching in several directions, though years of intense Russian shelling have degraded its usefulness and thinned movement along its supply routes. The town's position makes it a natural anchor for any Russian push south of Zaporizhzhia, and Moscow has committed significant manpower to the effort.
Reinforcements and the drone kill zone
According to reporting from the front, Ukraine's high command has deployed several detachments of airborne brigades to the sector after they completed rotations following successful Ukrainian counterattacks elsewhere on the southern and eastern fronts. An officer of Ukraine's 65th Mechanized Brigade says further Russian infiltration attempts into Orikhiv have been countered with the help of these additional assault forces, which have significantly expanded the Ukrainian drone kill zone and are striking Russian force concentrations and logistics with renewed intensity.
The same officer states that Russia has concentrated more than 150,000 soldiers in the sector, including 120 dedicated assault groups — a figure that, if accurate, underscores the scale of Moscow's commitment to the axis. The officer also says Ukrainian units have identified and fixed problems with their equipment, drones and electronic warfare systems. Russian jamming had reportedly disrupted the frequencies Ukrainian drones were operating on, allowing recent Russian advances to meet reduced resistance; with those issues now resolved, Russian units that advanced under that electronic cover have become open targets.
Geolocated footage shows Ukrainian Vampire heavy bomber drones operating at scale over Orikhiv itself, dropping heavy munitions on Russian infiltrator positions. FPV drone strikes have hit Russian positions in Mala Tokmachka to the east, while Ukrainian glide-bomb strikes targeted Russian positions on the eastern flank. Ukrainian strikes have also hit river crossing points, bridges and anti-tank ditches, complicating the rapid movement of Russian reinforcements on motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles.
Moscow's claims versus the frontline reality
Since the reinforcements arrived and drone activity surged, Russian forces have failed to register any new confirmed advances in the sector. Fighting continues inside Orikhiv itself, with Russian troops still attempting deeper infiltration on the flanks. Most notably, on the western flank the fighting has shifted away from Yurivka and Tavriiske, where Russian infiltrators had earlier established positions — an indication they can no longer reach as far into the Ukrainian rear.
Russian sources have circulated footage purporting to show their soldiers capturing a settlement south of Orikhiv, but with no flag-raising footage or other confirmed Russian presence, the claim is unverified. An ISW assessment dated September 10 noted that Ukrainian forces were maintaining positions in Novodanylivka, south of Orikhiv, in areas where Russian forces had previously infiltrated. Meanwhile, Russian state-linked outlets have trumpeted claims of an "encirclement" of Ukrainian troops in Orikhiv — claims that sit uneasily alongside the absence of any confirmed Russian advance.
The picture that emerges is of a Russian offensive that gained ground while Ukrainian drones were suppressed, and has now stalled as fresh Ukrainian troops and a restored drone screen reimposed themselves on the battlefield. Whether Ukraine can convert the halted offensive into a rollback of Russian gains around Orikhiv and Mala Tokmachka will be the test of the coming weeks.
