Russia launched a fresh wave of overnight air strikes on Ukrainian cities, injuring civilians in Kyiv and Odesa, as Ukraine's General Staff marked the 1,681st day of the full-scale invasion with a grim accounting of Russian losses: some 1,900 personnel in the last 24 hours alone.

Overnight strikes injure civilians in Kyiv and Odesa

Russian air strikes injured one person in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and another in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, the Ukrainian emergency service and an Odesa city official said on Thursday, according to Reuters. Infrastructure was damaged in Odesa — a city Russia hits frequently in an effort to choke off Ukraine's export revenue — with the head of the city's administration, Serhiy Lysak, confirming the damage but giving no further details.

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 107 drones of various types, including 63 jet-powered drones, between 6pm on September 30 and 8am on October 1 from Orel, Millerovo, Bryansk, Shatalovo, Donetsk and Crimea. Air defences suppressed or neutralised 87 of them, but hits were recorded at 11 locations and debris fell at another four.

In Kyiv's Solomyanskyi district, one person was injured in an overnight attack that damaged a room on the first floor of a 16-story building, setting it ablaze while parked cars below were engulfed in flames. On the morning of October 1, Russia struck a school in the same district, starting fires — the children were luckily in a shelter, and no injuries were reported. A large fire also broke out in a warehouse building in the Obolonskyi district, and one injured person was taken to hospital. In Odesa, Russia struck a business centre, injuring one person; the blast wave shattered windows, partially destroyed walls on the 5th floor and started a fire.

209 combat clashes and 1,900 Russian losses in 24 hours

Ukraine's General Staff reported 209 combat clashes over the past 24 hours. According to the report, Russia launched 22 missiles and 78 airstrikes — including 277 guided aerial bombs — and deployed 7,650 kamikaze drones alongside 2,656 artillery strikes against Ukrainian positions. In response, Ukraine's defence forces reportedly struck an area of concentration of Russian personnel and two Russian command posts.

Total reported Russian losses in the last day reached around 1,900 personnel, bringing Moscow's cumulative personnel losses since February 24, 2022 to approximately 1,535,870, the General Staff said. Also destroyed or damaged in the past day: one combat vehicle, 36 artillery systems, three multiple launch rocket systems, one air defence system, five missiles, 14 ground-based robotic complexes, 1,288 drones, 524 vehicles and four units of special equipment.

Casualties across the regions

The fighting reached deep behind the front lines. A 44-year-old rescuer died in the Nikopol district of Dnipropetrovsk as the Marganets, Pokrovska and Chervonohryhorivska communities came under shelling and FPV drone attacks. In Kharkiv region, Russia struck the Izyum district with a guided aerial bomb at around 5:15am, injuring a 45-year-old man and damaging more than 20 residential buildings. A 68-year-old man was injured in Tsyrykany, and drone strikes hit a shopping centre and an apartment building in Kharkiv city's Kyslytskiy district.

One person was killed and four injured as Russia targeted 22 settlements in Kherson region, damaging infrastructure and residential areas. In Sumy, two women aged 60 and 41 were hospitalised after a guided aerial bomb struck a residential area of the Kovpaky district, damaging six residential buildings, while a shopping centre in the Romensk district was struck overnight and firefighters had to repeatedly suspend operations under the threat of follow-up attacks. In Zaporizhzhia, three people were injured during 771 Russian attacks across 41 areas. In Rivne region, a woman was hospitalised with injuries to her shoulders and face after a night-time attack damaged her house.

A grinding war of attrition

The overnight assault and the day's casualty figures underscore the war's brutal arithmetic as it grinds toward its fourth winter: Russia continues to expend men and munitions at a staggering rate for marginal territorial gains, while Ukraine's layered air defences and precision strikes keep degrading Russian command posts and logistics. With Moscow escalating its campaign against Ukrainian cities and export infrastructure, the coming months will test both sides' endurance — but the ledger of October 1 shows a Kremlin war machine still paying a fearsome price for every advance.
